What is a QR Code?
A QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode type developed in 1994 by the Japanese automotive company Denso Wave (a subsidiary of Toyota). While traditional linear barcodes can only store information in the horizontal axis, QR codes store information in both horizontal and vertical directions. This allows them to hold hundreds of times more data than traditional barcodes.
How Does a QR Code Work?
When you scan a QR code using a smartphone camera or a dedicated reader app, the software analyzes the patterns inside the square. Three large squares at the corners (finder patterns) help the scanner identify the orientation and angle of the code.
The small black and white cells inside the grid represent 0s and 1s, similar to the binary system used in computing. The scanner decodes these patterns and instantly presents the underlying data—whether it is a website address (URL), a plain text, a phone number, or a Wi-Fi password.
